Abstract

Subjective evaluation of lameness in dogs was recently conducted by veterinarians and was found to be unreliable due to differences in experience of the examiner (i.e. human error). A system or equipment providing objective data may be an effective aid to localize lameness in clinical cases. The purpose of this project was to develop a weighing system which would provide an objective evaluation of data for lameness in dogs. This weighing system was designed to measure the weight placed on each foot, with a maximum weight of 20 kilograms at a precision scale 10 grams resolution. A voltage signal from the force sensors is converted to digital numbers and transferred to the Arduino-based microcontroller. After the signals have processed using the Arduino programming, a waveform graph is sent to a display computer via the LabVIEW program. In addition, the LabView program is able to transfer these data into a Microsoft Excel format for further analyse. The results from preliminary diagnosis tests using this technology, on healthy dogs and injured cats, correspond with examinations conducted by experienced veterinarians.
