Intelligent Vehicle Safety System using Smartphone

Abstract:

We propose an active vehicle safety implemented in an android smartphone. The project has two functions: location-based warning and accident detection. The location-based warning warns a driver when the vehicle moves toward a dangerous point. The system periodically read the GPS location, heading and compare with points in a database. The system warns the driver if both location and heading of the vehicle are coinciding with the location and heading of a dangerous point. The accident detection uses an accelerometer to detect an impact force. The system recognizes accidents when the value of acceleration exceeds a threshold. When an accident is detected, the system sends a report to a center via EDGE/GPRS cellular network.
